I still have mine from the mid 80s (Aquarians, mostly), and had bought more from MKP in anticipation of playing "A Billion Suns" with them - a game, I might add, that really didn't resonate with me.
With our first game coming up, I resolved to have a small fleet done by mid-October. To do that I'll need to take some cheap and dirty shortcuts, which I really don't have a problem doing with these ships.
Here is the first off the production line, an Aquarian Piranha-Class Destroyer named U-96 (the word "destroyer" starts with "U" in Aquarian, really) of the 9th Aquarian Floatilla :D...

As you can see, no real fucks were given to neatness or scheme - the colors just happened as I noodled along, the only real stipulation is that my Aquarian fleet is dark grey. In fact, it's almost exactly the same scheme as the one I settled on in the 80s (but slightly better, and with less Testor's enamels). It'll be good to get these old ships back out on the table again - hope there's an option for self-destructs, because I really want to play this at least once during the game:

As a veteran Ork hunter, it fell to him to mentor new recruits and train them in the ways of Greenie-slaughter. Today was another lesson in "how to take out stationary Ork dreadnoughts" - rather conveniently, they came across a stalled out red one not too far from base and went to work.

KLAAANNGGG!

After ensuring the dread was blinded/immobilized, Darius climbed on top of it and had a recruit throw a good-sized stone to him. Grinning from ear to ear he began to smash the stone on the locked hatch, knowing that the greenie inside would get annoyed enough to unbutton and come out, giving the marines yet another easy kill. Glancing around, Sgt. Darius saw his recruits edging forward, bolters at the ready. "Any time now, lads. Get ready.", he said through the vox, raising the stone for yet another strike -

- quick as a snake, and as loud as a thousand rusted gates, the dreadnought's Klaw grabbed Darius around his middle and easily snipped him into two sections. In shock the squad of recruits began to fire ineffectually against the now-active dreadnought's hide.

Smeggit the gretchin was a smarter than the average Grot - he heard that some of da Boyz were being wiped out by some sneeky Beekies using the ol' "Smak da Kan Wiv a Rock" trick. Vowing to not be as stoopid as the other ladz, he patiently played dead and waited until the Beekies came around to try their trick on them. "Well, Smeggit, me old lad, so far so good.", he muttered to himself. "One Beekie Boss in two pieces, and a bunch more in flama range. Time ta cook!"

Knowing that he shouldn't, but absolutely unable to resist, Smeggit cracked the hatch just enough to give the old wun-finger salute (in stereo!), and then thumbed the trigger...

A rude lad.

I love me some 3-D printing. This model is entirely so - it doesn't appear to be a scan, but a ground-up digital sculpt based on the Rogue Trader Ork Dreadnought (Killer configuration). Scratch that - I REALLY started this guy in 1984, but didn't get much further than some dark red on his back (demons are red, donchaknow). Sucks, because I have people waiting on me to get stuff painted for them - Jacob at Ral Partha Legacy for one. I managed to get a couple big pieces done for him, just so he doesn't have to wait forever to get something. By the way, Jacob Fathbruckner is a top-shelf, patient guy and you should buy tons of miniatures from him.

The cannon was fun to paint. Once I figured out how to assemble it, I really liked painting the cannon itself. The crew, on the other hand, were a bit of a chore as old RP sculpts are SUPER tiny compared to today's miniatures. On top of that, my eyes aren't quite up to the task anymore (see older post with glasses), so I regretfully have to forgo things like eyes on most of these - in fact, only the leader has them as the sculpt has larger, accessible eyes. Still, happy with how they turned out, despite how crappy the picture looks (also see older posts concerning my inability to take good pictures. The camera on my Galaxy 21 is a pox...)

What's worse than a bunch of goblins? Blurry goblins.

These got done too, and are kind of the reverse of the steam cannon - the crew and wolves went quick, but the chariots were tedious. Probably because of all the stuff I tacked onto them, like shields, weapons and heads. Me being me, I just couldn't glue them to the chariots - oh no, I had to PIN the suckers on (these tiny, tiny pieces). Worth it, as (once again) the models look great in real life over my pictures. I/m probably going to poach the pictures Jacob takes and put them up here later, just so I don't look so bad ;)
Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-11005463871454972452021-12-01T23:17:00.003-08:002021-12-01T23:17:38.497-08:00Welp...

Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-90288319612945415272021-11-27T18:36:00.004-08:002021-11-27T18:43:14.067-08:00"But They Don't Live In A Cave..."
Tonight's offering is a set of Reaper's "Black Bear Clan" cavemen - plus one - for the game "Palaeo Diet - Eat or be Eaten" game.

L to R - Thug, Klunk, Ooga, Thunk, Ugh.

The "plus one" is, of course, a Citadel "Big Momma" barbarian girl (aka, Ooga). For sure, the material has improved to the point that it little resembles the bendy unworkable crap that it once was, but it still has issues that annoy the hell out of me - not being able to use spray primer/sealer on them being a big one. Warped spears, swords, etc. being a close second.

Bless their hearts though; Reaper has put a LOT of effort in promoting the Bones line, even resorting to giving them away by the handful (especially true of the early white ones). Swag bags, paint-n-take tables, you name it.

Naturally, this lands me with miniatures that I'd never buy and have no idea what to do with them. Here, that is realized in the following two miniatures, a couple of sea hag types (the tall one has a name like Mags Grindylow or summat). These sat in a parts box for a loooong time until I started reading Robert Howard's original Conan stories. I always loved that a lot of his supranational entities were often vague shadows, sometimes with animalistic characteristics (the critters in "The Phoenix on the Sword" and "The Scarlet Citadel" are a little like this).

Hey, says I - rather than try to paint these bendy, low detail bits of nonsense with a good paint job, why not paint them black with a couple indifferent drybrushings and call it a day? A couple months ago, I reached out to Jacob at Ral Partha Legacy to see if he needed any miniatures painted for their website. As it turned out, he did and had quite a list of miniatures to choose from. One of the first sets to catch my eye (of course) was the Amazon ballista and crew. I say "of course" because these ladies (sculpted by Tom Meier) are quite noticeable due to their exaggerated female proportions (they have big boobs for the thickies in back).

And I do mean exaggerated.

Odd really - I bought a blister pack of Amazons from the OG Ral Partha a lifetime ago, and they had very athletic (downright skinny) forms, and were nude (these were also sculpted by Meier). Somewhere along the line, someone looked at these and said, "no, there proportions will not do. Tom, get the sculpting putty out - you're putting in overtime."

Originals on the left, Heroic Scale on the right.

SOMEone's got a fetish. Not complaining, mind you, just pointing it out.

As RP Legacy gives you copies of the miniatures you paint upon successful completion, this is a really good deal. I mostly wanted the two ballistae that come with the 6 crewwomen, but I will certainly find a place for the ladies themselves - probably in a Dragon Rampant army.

Thanks to my weird schedule, extra shifts and the hell of being on call often, it took me about 1 1/2 months to finish them. They really don't look all that bad either, even after a near-disastrous experiment with bronze armor. Couldn't do the eyes though - Meier miniatures are teeny and they have helmets on. After I finished, I took a bunch of pictures for Jacob to see that I was done, boxed them up and sent them on their way.

Then I looked at the pictures.

UGH.

This is amateur hour, folks.

I bought a new photo box from Reaper miniatures recently. The Amazons will probably be painted up the same way as here, but they'll all get spears to hold (I think these are meant to be "artillery tools". I painted the stubby spears up like the ballista bolts to designate those girls as the loaders.) The ballistae will be generic for whatever army/game needs them.

Last note - Meier sculpted the Amazons themselves, no clue who sculpted the ballista. Plastic GW spirit hosts. MASSIVE pain in the ass to assemble (which is why you only get one this time). I didn't take the highlights up to white, as I feel that it makes them look more "opaque" instead of ethereal. I used a glaze of ancient but still very good Citadel yellow ink on their upper faces and arms to give them a little glow and add some visual interest - I stole this idea from one of the blogs I follow. If it works, it works!Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-82571372185753333912020-01-06T09:45:00.000-08:002020-01-07T10:27:43.516-08:00Late For Gnollvember<span style="background-color: #660000; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As usual, I paint something and then forget to blog it. In this case, I painted up a trio of gnolls for the "Gnollvember" thing from the Ral Partha Harag Skullsmasher and his Gnoll Raiders box set that came out in the early '90s. I didn't care much about them being gnolls (although they have become one of my favorite humanoid monsters over the years), but I was certainly excited about using them in my 2nd Edition WH40K Chaos army as a unit or two of Khornegor - that is, beastmen aligned to the Chaos god, Khorne.
25 years old, and these are still very nice miniatures. Good size, detailing that one would expect from Partha stuff; the only real letdown is the meh poses that seemed to plague the Battlesystem sets (and again, Partha in general). The gnoll box has 17 minis in it - one leader (Harag), one flind shaman (who looks like a Mardi Gras drag queen), and 15 mooks, in 3 different sculpts. As seen in the photos, I chose two in my favorite sculpt. the third is in a weird crouching, jazz-hand pose that I'm going to need to work a bit for it to look decent.
Been a while, my dear imaginary viewers!

Unfortunately, I have had a crapton of things come down in life over the past few months, and they have kicked my desire to paint right out of me. Truth be told, I have started at least 4 different projects, but I ended up stalling out on each of them. Part of the problem might be the fact that I am now using readers to paint, and it's not been easy to adjust to them.Hopefully, there will be a noticeable improvement in my finished products, but as usual, I'd just be happy with decent jobs done quickly.

Now, if this was the only issue, I'd have shamed myself into finishing at least one project, but when it rains, it pours. My job (Radiologic Technologist, a.k.a. X-ray tech) is kind of kicking my ass these days. Over a month ago, my ankle started aching to walk on - still able to walk, but had to limp. With a brace and a doctor's unhelpful advice of "Keep off of it!", I persevered. At least until all the limping caused my hip to start aching too.

Lovely.

For the past couple weeks, I have been taking it as easy as possible, meaning no sitting at a desk for too long, and keeping my hip rested and happy. Of course, my three 12-hour work days would roll around and mess up the process all over again (that, and I'm incapable of sitting idle for too long. I managed to install the flooring and baseboards in my bedroom at the beginning of the month, as well as move and reassemble all the stupid, heavy-assed furniture that my wife insisted that we needed. That was an agonizing few days...)

But, I pushed through. Things are healing and feeling better. Realizing that I'm not so young any more, I finally started the process of applying for MRI school, which should keep me off me feet better than being a RadTech. Seriously, this is my day for 12 hours - take X-rays in the ER. Now run upstairs with a portable and x-ray some fat-arse's pelvis and risk destroying my back. Now back to the ER. Now run up to surgery and stand around for a few hours, taking shots for the surgeon. (truth be told, surgery is my favorite part of my job. I wear about 10 to 15 pounds of lead gear for protection, which strains my back, but it beats giving barium enemas any day).

But my life isn't all whine-worthy. Certain unbloggable things are changing/have changed in my life, one of the results of which is that I finally get to take over the front office room in the house as my hobby area! Yaaaassss. Now that I'm feeling better physically, I'm slowly moving the stuff out of that room, and moving my stuff in. Unfortunately, the office was being used as general junk storage for a year and a half or so, so it's going to take a while (so an even longer interlude from painting. It will be so very worth it, though...

Looks cosy, ya? Sure, except I am standing in the kitchen to take this picture. The white door leads to the garage, and to the left, out of frame is the back door to the yard, and the living room passage is further left from that. In short, I'm in the middle of everything here, and don't get the peace and quiet I like from a work area. Plus, being wide open like this means that the cats are constantly fucking with stuff, as well as getting hair all over my work table.

This used to be my wife's office area, mostly needed when she was a massage therapist. She let that lapse when she became a full-time nurse, so this lovely little space (which is really about the same size as the current area, it just has 2 more walls) was being misused as crap storage. She always does her paperwork and bills at the kitchen table, so this room wasn't even used for that. So now dis old troll is swooping in. Of course, I'm not being helped by anybody so it's going to be a while before I'm up to production speed.

Hopefully a faster speed than previously...

Now, if I could really have my way, I'd leave TX entirely, but that's getting into the unbloggable territory. Gotta take those victories where you can!Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-2874663068579041132019-06-18T21:57:00.000-07:002019-06-18T21:57:11.227-07:00PDF TarantulaAlmost didn't post this one - this pair of miniatures gave me all sorts of shit during the painting process (see "Sometimes We Hate Our Children"), and I couldn't get a decent picture of them no matter what I did. Yes, yes, I'm still using my phone camera; but the Galaxy S9 takes good pictures of everything ELSE, just not my miniatures.

Black and blue? Why not? Back in 1989, this color scheme was going to be for my Imperial Guard army, which I shelved after painting an entire squad worth. (I really hate painting large amounts of black, it turns out.) About 5 years ago, I started another IG army out of the now OOP Wargames Factory Greatcoat soldiers (also shelved), so I just said that these old Guard guys were going to be part of a PDF somewhere, probably with a Squat force attached as allies (it all counts as a Guard force, games-wise).

The Tarantula itself came into my possession loooong ago, partially broken and caked in green paint. The operator only had a couple areas painted on him, so he wasn't in bad shape. You may notice that the parts that hold the lascannons are a little shorter than they were when the model was new - that's because the broken part had to be trimmed down, so I did that to both sides so they matched.

I had to drag out one of the finished guys so that I had a reference:
Way back when the game came out (1989 or so), I bought into it pretty hard; the original rules, the Clantroops (Clans, *puke*) expansion, and both boxed sets of miniatures, Kurita and Steiner. Well, my group and I played about three games and decided we didn't like it, so into the footlocker of shame they went.

Nostalgia being a thing, I recently dug the miniatures out and decided to actually paint one, just to see how the uniforms as presented in the sourcebooks look in 3-D. The Draconis Combine (House Kurita) being my absolutely favorite successor state in the Battletech is what pushed to choose this guy. That, and the Steiner uniforms are hideous.
Now, the descriptions in the sourcebook describe the undersuit as being tan, but the pictures all show it as being a closer-to-orange color. Interestingly, I have an old Ceramcoat paint that is almost an exact match.
It has been a good long while since I painted something with the tiny scale/proportions of a Ral Partha mini. Going from chunky Citadel to this was a great challenge to my poor old eyes - needless to say, the paint job is a bit, er, abstract, and I didn't even think about HIS eyes.
One thing we never tried in the three games we played was to use the rules for 'Mechs in Battletroops. Yes, 'Mechs. In an infantry game. Not too sure if we were worried about how hard that would be, or if we were just bored by the fact that the 'Mech is represented by a flat, square templare. Yaawwnn. Me being a dumb-assed kid at the time didn't realize that I had a few 'Mech models at my disposal in the form of Robotech toys (which I e-bayed off quite a while ago ;/). Nostalgia still continuing to be a thing, I recently bought a little buddy to go with my Battletroop miniatures, should I decide to continue with them:
I didn't actually own them back then - they are both somewhat recent acquisitions from Ebay lots. Both thugs have the appearance of "just joined Chaos and got our first attributes" recruits. Raeg here obviously got "Brightly-Patterned Skin" for his, and boy-oh-boy is he pleased that it's RED. This miniature's cartoonish, over-exaggerated ANGERY (spelling also intentional) pose could only land him in a Khorne warband (that, and I am also a big Khorne fanboy). I mean, he's screaming at the ground for fuck's sake! It's like he saw a spider on his foot, and now he's all, "DO YOU CHALLENGE ME TO A DUEL SIR?!?!" Being a worshiper of the Blood God, he won't miss a few absent toes; especially if he rolled a couple Personaliy Losses too.
So yay, they're done - until/unless I get my hands on the four variant sculpts that I lack, as well as the 2 star player skaven (Hackflem Skuttlespike and the single-headed, 4 armed mutant from this era).Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-52279135277782800252019-03-22T07:01:00.000-07:002019-03-22T07:01:16.544-07:00Safe to do Paint-y Things Now?Sorry, imaginary readers - I've had little drive to paint lately (mostly thanks to my family getting me a PS4 with Fallout 4 - that's like giving a crackhead a free pass to the crack house). Also, this was a very wet winter, meaning that I've not been able to prime or seal any miniatures for quite a few months, and my miniature "holding area" has been full.

Fortunately the painting itch always comes back, and last night I made headway with some stuff that I will be posting in the coming week.Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-69867453453127284872019-01-23T13:40:00.001-08:002019-01-23T13:40:24.014-08:00"They Were Once Men..."Super-quick one here. A simple weapon swap with a plastic GW Empire soldier, and a paintjob that didn't even take as long as the swap did, and he's a done deal! I drybrushed some brown around his hem to represent mud on his robes (but especially to break up the monotonous black and grey scheme). Great miniature - absolutely full of menace.
I love these miniatures, but for some reason it feels like a chore to make myself do them (and it shows in the work). Oh well, I only have four left (another blitzer, thrower, and two linemen) and this project will be done - except for the cheerleaders that I need to convert from old Ral Partha ratmen. And a couple other specials. And I'll need to paint the four variant figures that I don't have (if I ever get them) as well as the Hackflem Skuttlespike mini (if I ever get that).

So yeah! almost done! :)Gitkikkahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11824743572841607926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8456022883743028459.post-72295451523762319652018-12-13T20:03:00.000-08:002018-12-13T20:03:08.154-08:00So You Better Be Good...For goodness sakes...
Wargames Foundry's Bazooka Santa. Found him in a forgotten box o' miniatures and figured that this was the best time of year to paint him up. Knocked him out in two quick sessions - how could I not with his limited palette?
